According to ACLU "Taking photographs of things that are plainly visible from public spaces is a constitutional right"

Nowadays, everyone films and photographs with their smart phones. Therefore, taking photographs of an event should not be an odd thing. Perhaps this is a theater class at UCLA held outdoors. Only a couple of stills were taken from this gathering. The instructor chased & questioned me and was very upset that I had taken the stills. One shouldn't be bullied and intimidated at an academic institution. The public has a right to know what happens at a public event even if it causes embarrassment.
